Blackwork is built on black: solid fill, a bold line, hatching, ornament and graphic contrast. Such tattoos read well from a distance and keep their crispness over time because they work on large forms.
The style allows strict geometric pieces, ornamental compositions and large graphic images. The sketch is chosen to suit the anatomy: the line and the fill should emphasise the shape of an arm, a leg or a back, not argue with it.
