Stages of healing
Healing goes in stages: from redness in the first days to full recovery of the skin after several months.
This is a guide, not a timetable: everyone heals at their own pace.
Stages day by day
Days 1–3
Redness, slight swelling, possible plasma discharge; the skin is sensitive.
Days 4–7
The skin dries, scabs and peeling appear, and there is itching.
Weeks 2–3
The scabs come off, the skin looks dull and the design looks slightly “veiled” by a film.
Months 1–3
The top layers have recovered, colour and contrast show fully, and the skin evens out.
What the timing depends on
- size and density of the work: the larger and more saturated the tattoo, the longer the skin takes to recover;
- body area: healing is harder on spots that rub, on bends and joints;
- care: following your artist’s instructions directly affects the result;
- individual features of your skin and body;
- exercise, sun, water and friction from clothes during healing.
What is considered normal
Redness and slight swelling in the first days, itching, dryness, peeling and thin scabs are a normal part of healing. During the process the skin can look uneven and dull, and the design less contrasty: once fully healed it looks crisper.
Why a tattoo looks “milky” and dull
When the scabs come off, a thin layer of renewing skin remains on top, which makes the design look faded. This usually passes within a few weeks. Do not try to “peel” it off yourself.
When to see a doctor
If redness and pain grow, the skin is hot, or there is pus, an unpleasant smell or a raised temperature, do not put off seeing a doctor. Do not treat such symptoms on your own, and let your artist know.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface usually takes two to three weeks, full recovery from one to several months. It depends on the area, the size of the work and care.
How long does peeling last?
Peeling usually lasts about one to two weeks, but it differs from person to person. Do not pick the flakes, they should come off on their own.
Why does a tattoo look faded after healing?
When the scabs come off, a thin layer of renewing skin stays on top. The design usually shows up within a few weeks.
Do I need a touch-up after healing?
That is decided once the tattoo has fully healed: your artist will look at the work and say whether it needs a touch-up.
